I made this sculpture for 3D class fall semester at RISD. The assignment was to take an object and create a "vessel" to hold it. Thus, I found a random stick laying on the ground one day and decided to use that. The medium is plaster and I carved it using various sculpting tools. This piece shows the relationship between structures in nature and man-made creations. The stick comes from nature while the pieces of plaster holding it have geometric elements akin to modern skyscrapers. However, at the same time, the plaster pieces also have naturalistic curves that hold the stick comfortably. Furthermore, I wanted to play with different methods in which the plaster could hold my object. In some of the plaster pieces, the stick is simply balanced on top while in others the plaster wraps around the stick.
